Full-Scale DEXSORB System for PFAS Remediation of Metal-Plating Wastewater (MI)


Background

A metal plating service provider detected twelve PFAS at a total concentration of 36,704 ppt in the final process water at its Michigan facility. PFOS was detected at 840 ppt on average, in excess of the city PFOS discharge limit of 28 ppt. The facility utilizes coagulation and sedimentation process to remove metals and requires PFAS treatment prior to discharge to the city’s sanitary sewer.

Installation

Cyclopure engineers designed and installed a full- scale DEXSORB PBF system, consisting of two vessels in lead-lag configuration. The DEXSORB system operates at a 45-gpm flow rate for approximately 18 hours per day, 5 days per week.

Since Installation

The DEXSORB system has been operating for 335 days and provided complete removal of PFOS to non-detect. The lead vessel is still performing PFOS removal to 96%, and is expected to last until 18 months before changing out. The DEXSORB system has operated with smooth hydraulics and no operational complications from metal precipitation. The DEXSORB system has allowed the metal plating facility to operate in compliance with local discharge limits with no violations.
