DEXSORB Pilot for PFAS Removal from RO Concentrate in (NC)


Background

A pilot-scale study was conducted for the City of Greensboro, NC at their Mitchell Water Treatment Plant (WTP) from October 2021 through October 2022. The primary purpose of the pilot-scale study was to evaluate advanced treatment technologies for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) removal. The City of Greensboro operates the Mitchell Water Treatment Plant (WTP), a 24 million gallon per day (MGD) conventional treatment facility. PFOS and PFOA have been detected in the City’s water supply for the Mitchell WTP along with other PFAS.

Installation

The Concentrate Pilot skid is owned by the City. This pilot treated concentrate from the Membrane Pilot and contained IX, GAC, and DEXSORB. The Concentrate Pilot columns were 6” in diameter and media depths and flow rates varied depending on desired empty bed contact times (EBCTs). The GAC EBCT was 10 minutes and the DEXSORB EBCT was 10 minutes.

Since Installation

The DEXSORB column operated for a total of 9 months (274 days) with minimal pressure drop of 0 to 1.75 psi. Using the same EBCT of 10 minutes, DEXSORB demonstrated superior treatment effectiveness and capacity for PFAS over Calgon F400 GAC. For the 9-month operation period, the DEXSORB column demonstrated effective PFAS removal for detected EPA-regulated PFAS, with over 99% removal of PFOS and PFHxS, over 85% removal of PFOA and PFNA. At the end of the study, PFBS removal was also over 85%.
