DEXSORB Pilot for PFAS Remediation in Surface Water (MA)


Background

A DWTP client in Massachusetts had the need to treat PFAS in one of its freshwater reservoirs, which is currently offline due to elevated PFAS contamination. MassDEP Regulatory PFAS were detected at 62.7 ng/L on average, more than the state drinking water limits of 20 ppt and EPA MCLs. This surface water has high TSS with turbidity measurements up to 7 NTU. Resulting from algae and sediments, TOC and TDS are also high in this water.

Installation

To treat PFAS in this surface water, Cyclopure engineers designed and installed a pilot system consisting of two vessels in lead- lag configuration to provide a 10 minutes EBCT (5 mins in the lead and 5 mins in the lag). To manage TSS in the surface water, two mechanical filters were installed prior to the DEXSORB PBF system. Backwash capabilities were also incorporated in the system design to handle situations of increases in backpressure. The DEXSORB system was managed by a third-party consulting firm (AECOM) and supported by the city for routine sample collection and system operation monitoring.

Since Installation

The DEXSORB pilot system treated raw surface water for 13 months, with no breakthrough observed from the lead vessel after 112,500 bed volumes of water treated. EPA PFAS6 were all removed to non-detect (< 1 ppt) by the system during the operation period. Following a successful pilot demonstration, MassDEP granted Cyclopure statewide approval, permitting the use of DEXSORB for drinking water treatment.
